This morning (12-12-2020), I headed out trackside once again to the Sunset Route between Casa Grande and Picacho Peak between 7:55 AM and 10:00 AM!

The first train of the day was Amtrak 2, the Eastbound Sunset Limited heading east out of Casa Grande at 8:05 AM. P42 #180 lead it once again, with #39 trailing behind.

AMTK180CASAGRANDEAZ-2.jpg

At 8:32 AM, UP 7663 headed west, leading an Intermodal train west out of Eloy.

UP7663ELOYAZ.jpg

Heading through Downtown Eloy, UP 8512 lead another Intermodal train at 8:48 AM.

UP8512ELOYAZ.jpg

At 9:31 AM, UP 9041 headed west with an auto/intermodal train past Picacho Peak, with KCS and Ferromex trailing behind!

On Friday, December 18, 2020, I headed up to Flagstaff for one last time in 2020 and it did not disappoint!  :)

At 1:32 PM, the first train I saw was a manifest train headed west, lead by BNSF 3766.

BNSF3766FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

At 2:27 PM, a grain train headed east rolled through, led by BNSF 8190.

BNSF8190FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

About an hour and a half later, at 3:53 PM, another manifest train rolled through Flagstaff, this one headed east. BNSF 5825 led this one!

BNSF5825FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

At 4:29 PM, BNSF 5942 rolled east with an Intermodal train. This train came outta nowhere!

BNSF5942FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

About 10 minutes later, at 4:38 PM, BNSF 7770 rolled west with a tank train.

BNSF7770FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

Just 4 minutes later, at 4:41 PM, BNSF 6535 lead with another intermodal/trailer train headed east.

BNSF6535FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

At exactly 5:00 PM, BNSF 6787 headed east with another intermodal train.

BNSF6787FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

Then, at 5:15 PM, BNSF 6024 went through with a manifest train headed east. It would be the last train I'd see in daylight, as the next few trains would roll by after dusk.

BNSF6024FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

What a great afternoon it was to finish of a wonderful 2020 of trains on BNSF's Seligman Subdivision! Although it wasn't as many as my last trip in August, it was still a pretty great day of action on the line! I can't wait for what 2021 will bring on this line! When I return up here, I hope to discover new locations here in the Flagstaff area to photograph more trains for y'all to see!  :D  -AZRails

Happy New Year, y'all! I know we are well into 2021, but I just haven't gotten around to uploading some of my rail photos here on RailfanAZ. I've taken a lot of great photos since my last post from when I was in Flagstaff on 12-18-2020, and I hope that y'all will enjoy them.

On 12-29-2020, I headed out to the Sunset Route one last time in 2020, and only  Here was UP 2671 leading MFWWC-27 through Picacho.

UP2671PICACHOAZ.jpg

On my way up AZ-87, I had heard from Austyn that there was an outbound switching at Mesa, and more than likely had UP 1013 with it. Sure enough, I got to Coolidge, thinking I'd see it there, but I heard on my scanner that they had "20 more minutes in Mesa". There went my opportunity to catch this train in daylight. I arrived into Queen Creek just minutes after sunset, and I saw a headlight all the way out in the distance. At 6:11 PM, it passed me, and not only UP 1013 was with it, but UP 1120 and UP 509 were with it as well! How did 1120 and 509 get on the train? I don't really know. And that was it for trackside action in 2020, a year that I truly was lucky to be out trackside a lot.

UP7330QUEENCREEKAZ.jpg

As 2020 came to an end, and 2021 said hello to the world, I headed out trackside for the first time in 2021 and caught the first inbound MTUPX of the new year, with UP 9008 leading.

UP9008TEMPEAZ.jpg

Later that night, I found out that NS 1807 would be on an inbound MHNPX-01 sometime in the next few days. Sure enough, 2 days later, on 1-3-2021, Austyn informed me of an NS unit on the inbound that someone saw in San Tan Valley. When it went by him, he confirmed to me it was NS 1807, trailing third. So I went out to Tempe and caught it there, with UP 5257 leading.

UP5257TEMPEAZ.jpg

I caught it again as it was arriving into Phoenix Yard, crossing the 3rd Street crossing in Downtown Phoenix.

UP5257PHOENIXAZ.jpg

3 days later, on 1-6-2021, Austyn informed me once again of another outbound, this time MPXTU-06. I joined him at the canal near downtown Gilbert to see it roll by. Nearly 4 hours switching in Mesa, UP 8649 lead this train, clearing by Austyn and I just minutes after sunset.

UP8649GILBERTAZ.jpg

On 1-9-2021, I captured this photo of UP 7696 with a burnt out ditchlight, rounding the curve into Mesa leading a ballast train for the Kyrene Industrial Lead more than likely, as they are now starting to work on that branchline too other than the Chandler Industrial Lead.

UP7696GILBERTAZ.jpg

On 1-11-2021, here was a surprise like no other, the return of UP GP60E #1013 leading the LKK30-11 south in Chandler.

UP1013CHANDLERAZ-25.jpg

On 1-13-2021, UP 1982, the "Missouri Pacific" heritage unit, lead the MTUPX-13 into Phoenix, and wasn't estimated to leave Phoenix until around 9:30 PM that evening. Well, sure enough, I went down to Phoenix Yard to try to see it, when all of a sudden, it cleared Phoenix just 5 minutes before I got there! So, without any hesitation, I headed over to Mesa to see it, along with Mark Traain! 2 down, 4 more to go!

UP1982MISSOURIPACIFICHERITAGEUNITMESAAZ.jpg

On 1-18-2021, here was UP 8363 leading a grain train after getting a warrant from MP 920 to MP 911. It was waiting for the Kyrene Local to clear the track just ahead.

UP8363TEMPEAZ.jpg

On 1-23-2021, there was another outbound MPXTU-23, this time lead by UP 6719, a former CNW Operation Lifesaver unit! The lighting was perfect when I captured this photo of it as it was switching in Mesa.

UP6719MESAAZ.jpg

Later that evening, @Shea The UP Railfan informed me with a screenshot from Heritage Units! It was of UP 1989, the "Rio Grande" heritage unit, leading on the ILBNS-23 when it was reported in Yuma earlier in the afternoon. Thinking I'd miss it, I was wrong! I headed down to Casa Grande to try to attempt to see it, At 8:12 PM, it went by, slowing down for an auto train lead by UP 7426, a flagless GEVO that was on the same track! If I had more time, I'd probably have gotten a long exposure photograph of it stopped, but at least I'm glad I caught it for my third UP heritage unit! I hope it comes back out west leading in daylight sometime in the next few days! Here's to a great 2021 ahead, y'all!

On Saturday, January 30, 2021, I headed up north to a snowy Flagstaff for my first railfan outing of 2021 on the BNSF Seligman Sub.

First train of the afternoon was BNSF 6843 headed east with a manifest train at 3:18 PM.

BNSF6843FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

At 3:34 PM, BNSF 7692 went through, heading east as well with an intermodal train.

BNSF7692FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

The first westbound of the day went by at 3:51 PM, with BNSF 3983 leading another intermodal train.

BNSF3983FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

Just as the westbound intermodal was ending, an eastbound intermodal train met with it, with BNSF 8361 leading it at 3:52 PM.

BNSF8361FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

Then, at 4:20 PM, BNSF 7645 headed through with a westbound intermodal, with ATSF 677, now a BNSF patched warbonnet third in the consist.

BNSF7645FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

13 minutes later, at 4:33 PM, BNSF 3878 went through with the Intermodal from Phoenix with 7 locomotives on the front!

BNSF3878FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

At 5:04 PM, the last eastbound until after sunset went through, with BNSF 7232 leading a trailer/intermodal train.

BNSF7232FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

At 5:30 PM, the first of three westbounds in a row went through, with BNSF 6299 leading the first one with a manifest train. This was taken from the Beaver Street crossing.

BNSF6299FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

At 5:51 PM, just 2 minutes before sunset, BNSF 4028 lead the second of the three westbounds, this one also being a manifest, and intermodal cars in the middle, with LORAM stuff at the rear of the train.

BNSF4028FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

Lastly, at 6:12 PM, the last of the three westbounds went through, and the last train I'd see. BNSF 4284 lead it, with an intermodal train.

BNSF4284FLAGSTAFFAZ.jpg

What a great first outing on the BNSF Seligman Sub in 2021, 10 trains photographed, 3 of them in passing that I didn't get a photo for a total of 13 trains on the day, the second most trains I've seen in one day. My next trip up here will more than likely be in the spring, so stay tuned for more great photos until then! -AZRails

UP GP60E #1013 heads north to Mesa with the LKK30-01 on an overcast Monday, February 1, 2021 afternoon in Chandler, somewhere between MP 934.10 and MP 933.10. -AZRails

What a great first weekend of February it was! Here's how it all unfolded.

On Friday, February 5, 2021, I was informed by Austyn that NS 1111, Norfolk Southern's "Barcode" unit, was on it's way out of Phoenix, leading MPXTU-05 after arriving earlier in the day on the counterpart MTUPX-05. Here it is, nearing the end of it's switching duty at Mesa. What a truly unique locomotive it was! It sure does look like a barcode!

NS1111BARCODEUNITMESAAZ.jpg

On Saturday, February 6, 2021, the following day, I headed out to the Sunset Route, after hearing about UP 1982 leading ZMQLC. Well, I missed it by a little bit. Either way, 2 great catches were on the way that didn't disappoint!

I headed out west of Maricopa, to the Rio Bravo Road crossing, to catch UP 6273, ex-SP unit leading the ISILB1-06 heading out of Maricopa, clearing through at 11:43 AM.

UP6273MARICOPAAZ-MODIFIED.jpg

I headed east out of Maricopa, near the Arizona Grain facility for the second of the 2 westbounds. Here's UP 5276 leading MFWWC-04, with KCS 4618 trailing second!

UP5276MARICOPAAZ.jpg

And that would be the end of a great weekend overall on both the Phoenix Sub and the Sunset Route! 3 great trains overall! -AZRails
