Subject: Looking for a couple of suggestions.

Hi Jeff, I hope you are doing well.

The first of next month my wife, son, and myself will be driving out to Casa Grande Arizona. I was wondering if you could suggest any good spots to watch and possibly shoot pictures/video of some trains along the way? We won't have a lot of time for stops or deviations from the route but my son is only 5 so we will have to take some breaks along the way.

We live in Jefferson City Missouri and are planning 2 days for the drive, looks like starting at Gallup we parallel the tracks along I-40 for quite some time.

If you have a suggestion for an alternate route without adding much time I would be interested as well.

On the return trip we are going to head north to Sedona, the Grand Canyon, possibly Zion National Park and/or Bryce Canyon. We are hoping to do the ride through the Royal Gorge as well.

Looking forward to using some of your great layouts and server coverage while out that way, I probably won't bring my mobile ATCS kit with me just to save space and I don't know that I would have much time to mess with it anyway, but thanks to all the hard work you have done I don't think I would need it much anyway!

I've been out that way once before but it was about 15 years ago and I'm not very familiar with it at all.

Thanks, Josh

Places we go:

1) Casa Grande, Across from Pepsi-FritoLay.  (CasaGrande-Tucson Local, Monday-Friday, Early-Late Afternoon).
2) Maricopa, Under the new overpass.
3) Shawmut, Trains have a great uphill grade when going East.

I second all these locations ^^^

ArizonaRails

I recommend the following areas:

-Cox Road rail crossing, right before I-10, since you can see signals in both directions to know that a train is approaching.

-Downtown Casa Grande, where it's horn alley, as there's 3 crossings right by each other. It's not the best area, but you can get some good shots there.

-One of the several crossings between Casa Grande and Maricopa. You can't beat how great the shots can turn out at one of these!

-On top of the AZ-347 bridge in Maricopa! If you're in the right spot, you can get some great photos here!

-Enid, 10 miles west of Maricopa. You can
get some great photos here as well!

Those are just some of the many locations that are out there along the line, and I hope that they enjoy their trip out here to Arizona!

JoshuaH

Hello everyone, I went ahead and joined the forum so I could post.

We won't be staying in Casa Grande for too long, it will be the first stop on our trip. From There we are going to spend a day in Sedona, then were going to ride the grand canyon railway from Williams. Then we will continue to Zion National Park and possibly Bryce Canyon. After that the trip is a bit up for debate between me and my wife LOL.

We will be taking I-44 out of Missouri to Oklahoma City, then I-40 to Holbrook AZ, then 377, 277, 260 and 87 into Casa Grade, at least that is the route google maps suggests. We are planning 2 days for the drive there, we need to make stops along the way to get out and stretch, we will have my 5 year old son with me and my wife has back problems so we will need some breaks. If anyone has any suggestions for spots along this route we might be able to not too far off the highway and maybe catch and shoot a few photos of some trains it would be very much appreciated!

Once I know more about the route for the rest of our trip I may ask for a few more suggestions.

Thanks!

Christi

Hi Josh, Welcome to the site!  Sounds like a really great trip you have planned.

Best Spot for Local Spur work and lots of horn action (I think this is where @ArizonaRails took one of those shots):

That is correct, Jeff!

The second photo of the five is where that was taken at.
